I used this to cut a hole in lath and plaster. It made enough holes for about 6-8 normal electrical boxes. Unfortunately the bit was pretty much toast after that. It did a good job but by the end it was almost burning the edges of the lath. Not that durable but good enough.

I called this the wood eraser. I ran this against the edge of the wall to remove excess plywood, and it was a breeze. I couldn't do that with a jigsaw because it was right against wall in the corner.

I also had to cut a circle for a hood vent. The original was rectangular. Trace the area to cut, and got it done in about 15 min. Couldn't think of any other tool that can do it easier. Will buy another for backup.

It does kick back a little, but you get used to it and use a little more strength to stabilize it.

I bought this bit at home depot for $8 and used it to cut 4 sheets of hardebacker board into a circle for an outdoor mosaic table substrate, using a 3 1/4 hp router and trammel arm. The bit worked quite well, athough I noticed I had to get the RPMs up on the variable speed router to get it to cut easily. I doubt using this bit in a lower powered roto zip could've produced the same results.

Perhaps the folks who don't like this bit should retry it in a router.

RotoZip DC1 Duracut Bit

Pros:

- 1/4" bits have significantly greater resistance to breaking than 1/8" bits. It's still possible to snap one, but you have to use much more force. If you are frustrated with how easy it is to snap 1/8" bits, and your application will be OK with a 1/4" bit, try one of these. (Of course, the tool will need a 1/4" collet.)

- Carbide cutters last much longer than tool steel.

- Works quite well on soft materials, such as most wood, plastics, and drywall. Has an excellent life if used only on softer materials. They work best at very high speed. I.e., instead of a drill, try them in a router or high-speed rotary cutter.

Cons:

- As with any such bit, when the material gets harder, it becomes less effective -- to useless. E.g., using it on hard products will dull the bit in a hurry. E.g., porcelain or other hard tiles, concrete products such as blocks, bricks, concrete stucco (in spite of their sales pitch), glass, steel, etc. They work pretty well on some tile backer-boards, but this wears them out faster.

Other:

Cutting some materials, such as drywall, creates lots of dust. I use a respirator.

Go this reconditioned and it came in great shape. The tool feels very solid although I have not yet used it for any real cuts. I bought this to replace my Dewalt spiral drywall saw. My Dewalt was hardly used but I was never all that happy with it (as an aside bought the Dewalt from Tyler Tool, it was supposed to be new but was obviously not, never got any response from them after multiple attempts to contact their customer service, stay away from Tyler Tool). Anyhow, the RotoZip came from CPO Bosch and I could not be happier. I have made several purchases from CPO and have been satisfied every time. This tools is much more solid than the Dewalt and also much quieter and much more versatile. The big difference is how much more stable the cut depth mechanism is. Can't beat this price for this high quality tool.

Item is great for base board cutting as you can control the depth of your cut. I cut through 1/2 inch softwood and could only cut 15ft before blade overheated my tool (almost too hot to hold). If you have alot of this size to cut it would be easier to remove the trim for sure!

Drywall or thin trim would be the perfect time saving item.

You can only adjust the height by placing a piece of material the correct thickness under the tool while you cut.

(it would have been easy to design this into the tool)

When cutting, the tool can be dangerous and highly advise no-one to be within 3ft of the operator as some kickback occur and it can get away from the operator if not firmly in control.

Got this attachment for my rotozip thinking that the decription would allow it to be used somewhat like a smaller circle saw. The blade works more like a sander than a cutting blade in that dust flys out of it like crazy. And the rotozip has so much power, even on low speed, that the tool is hard to control when cutting. Since I've just gotten a Dremel Multi-Max, I'm thinking of selling the rotozip.

Used the thing last week to cut some siding and sheathing from around a window frame that needed rebuilt. About the only other tool I can think of that may have done the job better would be a $400 multimaster.

I especially liked the way you can reorient the series of attachments to get get the most advantageous angle on your work. I also appreciate the adjustable depth-of-cut.

I've never owned a rotozip before but I knew I had this job coming up so I got the Rz20 kit and purchased this attachment locally. The whole shebang all gathered together is a little intimidating but if you take a little time to go through the manual and try to understand how each item fits and plays together it is really pretty simple.

I did read one review where the reviewer thought it was cheaply made because the cover kept falling off. It will fall off if its not properly installed. It uses two hooks about midway up the blade that MUST be engaged and then the cover must be slid up to engage the release tab. You have to be able to hear/feel it snap into place and it can take some effort the first few times. First time I put mine on I used a rubber mallet to get it up there. Matter of fact, the whole system uses interlocks or clamps or both to hold things in place.

All-in-all I am very satisfied with the tool and impressed with the insight that went into the design.

"Waste of time & money" 2010-07-11

I've had 2 of these in the past 8 months. The 1st one I bought to do some sheetrock work in a remodel. Before I did that though I needed to cut out some stucco around a window and then cut the wire lathe. I did these 2 things in 2 steps using the different blades required for the task. The length of of cut was 32". I ran it for 2- 10 minute periods total and finished the cuts. Great. But when I needed to use it 20 minutes later it no longer ran. I opened it up and cleaned out any dust (not much) and checked it with an electrical tester. Turns out the motor burned out. NO, I did not push it too hard. I used it for 2 of the specific things it is designed for (read the ads!).

Took that one back to Lowes (they were nice about it). Swapped it out and have used it for about 3 hours total in 4 months. The locking button for the mandrel popped out. Factory says ship it back and they'll be glad to fix it. Also the plastic base is way too flimsy for any serious work - it bends when leaned on.

How about making durable RZ in the 1st place? This is a great idea but someone needs to make a professional version that sells around $200.

I bought this set last year and used twice for cutting tiles and sheet rock for my shed. It worked fine.

This week I used it for cutting tiles and hardy backers for my kitchen remodel. I used few time then it died on me. I went to a near by home depot to buy a cheaper model with the same brand in order to finish up my job. I was about to finish but not yet done. It starts smell and had a high pit sound. I went in and returned it. How disappointed.

I used the metal wheel to remove a rusted bolt holding one of the shocks on my truck in place. Half way through pink dust began blowing out of the Roto Zip's air exhaust and I could hear gear grinding.

Any advice on what I could do to repair it would be greatly appreciated.

"How I have used my Rotozip" 2009-06-05

I ordered this kit to replace my original Rotozip that just failed. I had used it for a number of years so I wasn't unhappy that it failed, just unhappy that it failed in the middle of my current project! I wanted this newer model, rather than have my old one repaired, so that I could use the newer accessories that would seem to make the Rotozip even more useful. Rather than just go over differences between my original Rotozip and this newer model, I thought I'd share some of my home uses. I use the right angle adapter and metal cutoff wheel quite a bit. Great for cutting wire closet shelving to length, cutting bolts, rebar, and copper water pipes when there's not enough room to use a tubing cutter. Used the basic spiral saw bit extensively when I remodeled my kitchen. Had to trim the new cabinets a little and of course make cutouts for pipes. The diamond blade, sold separately, is also very handy. Can make cutouts in concrete block walls for electrical boxes. Also have used it to cut concrete lawn pavers to size. When I replaced a French door, the rough opening in my concrete and stucco home was just a tad too tight for the new door. If I had used a hammer and chisel I would have had a big mess to repair. The diamond blade quickly did the trimming without damage. I have a tile wet saw, but the new X-wheel tile accessory in this kit will come in handy when I do my next tile job, supplementing, but not eliminating, the tile saw. I probably won't buy the wood cutting X-wheel blade because I already have a Bosch flush cutting saw. I probably will purchase the Flex Shaft accessory as the shaft for my Dremel didn't last very long. I may get the vaccum attachment because the Rotozip does generate a lot of dust. Now, if I'm concerned about dust, I just have my wife stand by me with the shop vac hose in hand. I see from some of the other reviews that some were frustrated trying to use the the Rotozip. I would suggest that the Rotozip is just like any other power tool in these two aspects: 1) Some amount of time must be invested to learn what the tool can and cannot do, and one should practice before "going for score". When I first used this tool years ago, I did burn and break a few spiral bits, 2) I have found that any tool that says it's "multipurpose" actually does some things really well, other things adequately, and still other things not very well at all. My Sears radial arm saw claimed to be a drill, sander, router, and a planer as well as a saw. I quickly learned that it was a very good saw and that was all. I also own the Fein Multimaster, costing twice as much as this Rotozip kit. I have done things with the Multimaster that I don't think I could have done any other way. Having the Multimaster, routers,and other power tools, I would still say that the Rotozip is an indispensable tool and reasonably priced especially since you get the accessories. I'm anxious to try the included jig saw handle which can replace the included depth guide bracket. It would provide more stability than the guide bracket if you have room for it. One should not plan to use the Rotozip to make high quality furniture, although, with practice and careful use, it might be able to do that. I look at the Rotozip as a quick and sometimes the only way to remove material where you don't need absolute precision. There are ways to improve precision. For example, you can cut a straight line in drywall, or anything else, if you simply run the tool against a straightedge while you're cutting. The Rotozip is a basic need for any homeowner's toolbox.

"It works for what you need." 2010-05-03

I got this for a great price. And that was the only reason I like it. I found it really hard to control and make straight cuts with it. And that was even in 5/8" drywall. Sometimes it would cut smoothly through the drywall, other times it would struggle. I know why it does it, but it seems silly to me. I didn't care so much about this because the project I bought this for didn't require me to have straight cuts anyway. I was cutting holes in the drywall just to be able to get a drill inside the wall.

The thing makes a huge mess as well. The inevitable drywall dust blows EVERYWHERE because there's a fan inside the saw that blows dust away from the bearings. The sliding bracket that controls cut depth leaves black marks all over the surface you're cutting. They came off easily enough, but really?

The thing that drove me crazy was the fact that the attachments that RototZip makes DO NOT work on this saw. I bought a circle cut guide that said it worked on every RotoZip spiral saw (read the fine print, dummy!). But not this one.

I see that Dremel is coming out with a multi-role device for $99. So far it looks like the best deal. But if you're just looking to make quick, not-so-straight cuts then this will work for you.

"WARNING" 2010-05-08

I bought the RZ20 and this blade to cut some laminate flooring. The blade does not fit under the stock shield. You must buy an extra shield called the x-shield for it to work. So after buying the blade, I had to buy the x-shield which includes the same blade, lol. I was only cutting 5 feet of flooring, so I wasted $30.

If you have not bought the x-shield, buy it instead of this blade. I got mine at a home improvement store for $10-15 more than the blade itself, which is included for free.

I was tempted to mark Rotozip 3 stars for nickel and diming their customers. There is no reason they cannot make one shield to fit both the metal and wood blades. It is just an attempt to squeeze more cash out of people. Not only that it makes the tool more difficult to use and store.

I decided to go with 4 stars, because other than poor design which forces people to spend more money on accessories, and spend more time swithcing the shields around it does do a good job.

I purchased this for use with my RotoZip RZ20. I replaced the flooring in two rooms and this added an additional height of 1\2" to the exisiting floor. I used it to undercut the trim around the door frames. This cutting wheel has a diamond coating on it's edge so it doesn't look like a regular wood saw blade. I did use it with the RotoZip flush cutting attachment and wore gloves for safety in case of kickback. The blade made clean cuts, I found it best to proceed slowly and let the tool do the work.

I bought this to use for removing underlayment below toe-kicks (see my review of the Rotozip RZ20-4500 for full description). It cut through 1/2" plywood underlayment with linoleum over it with no effort at all, as expected. The pleasant surprize was that it also went through a couple of hidden nails without trashing the blade. This blade uses a bonded grit for cutting rather than teeth.

The resulting sawdust is fine. It clouds the air and floats around the work area. This could be expected so I can't downgrade the tool as a result. Keeping the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner close to the cut keeps the sawdust from going everywhere. This helps keep the homeowner happy.

Arrived on time, everything as advertised, works great. This is an 'intense' tool that really 'rips' (it's not for the faint at heart). Accessories are expensive, though. Note that it creates a TREMENDOUS amount of dust. I made the mistake of cutting through tile and grout around a kitchen sink (a small job) without completely blocking off the area...the dust travelled into every nook and cranny througout the house, even into the back rooms! (I got into big trouble from the wife for that one.) Other than that, it's a tool I'm happy to have.

"It Works, Not as Well as I Thought" 2010-06-18

I thought that this thing would cut through some fiberglass but the tips break off even if you go slow and easy. I wound up using the grinder head to cut the holes out in my boat for some nice Polk Audio MoMo speakers.

The grinder works very well.

The spiral saw tips break off too easily.

This is the first time I've had a problem with a factory reconditioned tool. It completely stopped working on it's first day of use. It worked for 5 minutes and then shut down as if I unplugged it. My first reaction was that it came unplugged, then I thought maybe my GFI circuit tripped, then I checked the fuse box - - - I checked everything. The return process is slow. First you've got to request authorization to return it, wait for them to respond, then wait for them to mail a return label by truck, then mail it back in slow mode and then wait for them to process the refund. They're on the west coast and I'm on the east coast. All transactions are by truck. I received my refund but like I said it's a slow process.

I got this for my CNC machine's porter cable laminate trim router with 1/4" chuck. after searching the net and finding only a few adaptors out there for way too much money, this was a nice price. it seems to work well too. If you need to adapt endmills and drills and such in your CNC's router, Get it! converts 1/4" to 1/8" bits...

"Great for tile" 2009-11-27

I bought the Rotozip for a on primary reason: I was attracted to the advertised ability to cut porcelain tile. The included tile cutting attachment (with rotary diamond blade) works very well and is really convenient, especially because it does not require water to cool the blade. The diamond bit also works, but is much rougher and can chip the face of the tile.

Pros: very accurate cutting straight lines and more complex designs.

Cons: These cons are all relatively minor, but a bunch of minor faults can reduce the experience.

1. Cheap, plastic tile saw blade cover makes cutting along a guide less than perfect.

2. Instructions on changing from the tile saw attachment to the tile bit are unclear. You just need to figure it out.

3. Using this tool for other advertised jobs (cutting cement board and sheetrock for example) are not nearly as accurate or good as other tools.

I am in the process of laying about 250 sf of tile and purchased these bits to allow me to make cuts in 1/2" backerboard (cement board). After one painfiully slow cut, the bit broke. I contacted Rotozip and they recommended using the RZ250 (1/4" shank bit). It's working out very well! RotoZip says that this bit should also work, but I think not. If you are cutting thicker cement board, pay the extra [money] and get the RZ250 bit.

"Not good for floor tile" 2002-02-07

I thought this tool was the perfect solution for my tiling project. Heed the warnings about not using it on floor tile or thick ceramic tile. I burned up a blade trying to drill through floor tile. It worked to make an irregular cut in the floor tile before it was installed but it took FOREVER. It was actually quicker for me to drive to the hardware store and have them cut the tile.

It did work great on the cement backer board. I just noticed the diamond wheel for cutting tile and I am hoping that will be better.

roto tile bits will do a good job on thin ceramic tiles for cutouts-straight cuts are hard-thick tile,marble,etc-forget it--bits burn up quickly on cement backer board and at $5.99 are not cost effective. Buy a small diamond blade for your 4" grinder--makita-dewalt etc. which are very effective, with a little practice they work fine--wear a dust mask and eye protection

I strongly recommend RotoZip! First, it spins REALLY fast, which means precise cutting. But as the manual says, make sure you use two hands. I can surgically cut away any opening (at any depth) in drywall, but where it shines is in its metal cutting. For example, you can engrave numbers or your name in large objects (such as other tools and equipment in case they're stolen and taken to the local pawn shop), you can slice through nails as easily as cutting cardboard, but I also found it handy to cut behind or underneath trim. I needed 1/4" removed from a piece of trim to make a new vanity fit in my bathroom and with with the extended disc, I was able to remove it without touching the wall or the floor. That's a lot easier than removing the trim and reinstalling it. This DR-1 version has both speed and torque, so make sure you know your cutting plan before you start. I bought mine on sale for half this price.

PS: Previous reviewer must be talking about another tool, because this RotoZip DR1 is seriously good in every way.

I got what I paid for. The original Zipmate I had fell apart. The pressed bearing came loose in the aluminum housing. The replacement is plastic... This tool manufacturer is just like all the others. Make it, sell it and let it fall apart. I have a 1954 Sears Roebuck drill and it still runs like a champ. Made in the USA by Americans, for Americans. More than I can say for this tool and most others. Use it till it breaks and throw it out.. Buy another one and make the Chinese rich.

I found this to be a great, unique and versitile tool. HOWEVER, it is not indistructable. I found this out the hard way. I am now on my second attachment but only because I used it as if it were an $800.00 industrial angle grinder. Let the blade do the cutting and DON'T FORCE it and you'll own it for a long time to come.

I had some thicker tile, but light glazing and it was a wall tile, but I suppose it could be floor tile also. It did not say floor tile. So, based on the tile package and Rotozip XB-TC1 Tile cut X Bit packaging, it sure looked like it should have worked. $12 at Lowes. I was cutting a 1 1/2" circle for a pipe. Initial entry hole went well working it around as I went through the tile. However, it didn't even get me 1/2 way before it lost it's cutting ability!!! I was going slow and worked it up and down. I was ticked, especially since this is the second one I've tried. ($24 so far). Finally had to break down and buy the $40 thicker Rotozip diamond bit. Rotozip is great overall, just DO NOT USE this bit ON THICKER TILE! Hope my mistake won't be yours.

Be warned. This cutting bit is good at cutting only thin ceramic tiles such as ceramic wall or counter tiles, not the typical thicker floor tiles. The cutting metallurgy appears to be a harden steel-alloy instead of embedded diamond or silicon-carbide. Consequently, if you use it to cut many tiles, the bit won't last. As the quality of the metallurgy is inferior than those made with molydenum-vanadium alloy, this bit is priced accordingly less. Note the packaging does not tout any claims as to special alloy. Unless your ceramic tiles are soft, you may find yourself buying several cutting bit.
